Agric Minister Commissions N2bn worth Tomato Processing Plant


To ban tomato paste imports

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh has commissioned a 30 Metric Tonnes per day processing facility.

The over N2 billion worth investment was established by the GB Foods in Kaduna State.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Minister described the initiative as part of governments commitment to reduce post harvest losses and boost productivity in the agricultural sector.

According to him, the pilot tomato farm which sits on a 30 hectares space is growing over 15 varieties of tomatoes with an expected average yield of 40-50MT/ha.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Developement, Chief Audu Ogbeh flanked by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele at the Commisioning in Kaduna State.

Ogbeh, who was accompanied by the Central Bank Governor, restated federal government determination to encouraging local production and processing of tomato.

He vowed to place ban on the importation of tomato paste to encourage massive local production.

He added that Nigeria is targeting the next two years to attain self-sufficiency in Tomato production.
