COVID-19: FG to inject N2.3 trillion into economy, says 5 million Nigerians may be impoverished

From: Kazeem Biriowo, Abuja

The Federal Government (FG) on Monday, disclosed plans to inject a total of N2.3trillion into the country’s economy.

This was even as it says about 5 million Nigerians may slip into abject poverty if drastic steps are not taken to forestall this.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha stated this at the daily briefing of the taskforce in Abuja.

He noted that though there is a current figure of Nigerians living in extreme poverty, the extra five million would emerge to a new figure.

His words: ” 5 million Nigerians will go into abject poverty if necessary steps are not taken. I am not talking of those that are already there but this is what will be added if necessary steps are not taken. So a modest attempt is being made to balance this.

“So our president was proactive enough to set up the sustainable economic committee, it’s been adopted and approved. N2.3 trillion will be injected into the economy.  We are trying to infuse the 2.3 trillion into the economy to develop the economy.”

On the pandemic, he reiterated the need for Nigerians to follow every preventive guideline saying; “The only important response is to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical interventions.

“For now, no cure, no vaccine, no drug……keep clean, do hand washing by sanitising your hands, avoid unnecessary travels, stay at home. You must stay safe and ensure that at the end of the day, you will be counted among the ones that are safe.”
