PAUL Aboi, Director, Kaduna State Fire Service on Wednesday says human factor was responsible for 523 fire incidents and 65 deaths recorded across year 2019 in the state.
He disclosed this during an interview at the state capital.
But, he noted that interventions of the service saved 63 persons and the state government about N199 billion worth of goods.
“Carelessness of residents is a major cause. i hope that the advocacy programme being embarked upon by the state government will help correct the anomaly and ultimately reduce fire incidents to the barest minimum,” Aboi said.
“Fire Prevention Unit of the service has been going to houses, offices, schools, markets and worship centres to sensitise people to fire preventive measures and what to do in case of outbreak.”
“The efforts of the Kaduna State Fire Service saved the state over N199 billion worth of goods while properties destroyed are estimated at N58 billion from over 523 fire outbreaks in the state between January and December 2019,” he added.
Highlighting the sequence of occurrence, Aboi said the festive period of December witnessed highest fire incidents with 69 outbreaks, then January 74, February 65, March 67 and April 61.
“The high rate of fire outbreak is usually from December till April because the period is the core dry season.”
According to him, 141 persons were injured while 65 persons died.
However, he advised the public to remain careful especially during dry seasons, stressing that the fire service should be first point of call during such incidents.
