Pakistan bans plastic bags August 14

THE Pakistani Government has joined other nations globally which resolved to ban the use of plastic bags in their country.

The ban on use of plastic bags will take effect from August 14, especially within ministries, departments and agencies.

The decision followed a meeting between Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari and Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul who visited the ministry to launch plastic bag free drive.

The announcement is aimed at helping the nation of over 170 million check pollution by non-recyclable waste.

According to the government authorities, the nation uses 55 billion plastic bags annually, and this is said to have rendered the rivers useless, thus contributing to global plastic pollution.

Offenders could as well be fined $70 for flouting the law.

Plastic pollution is one of the sources of non-biodegradable pollutants with severe impacts across land, water and ocean, affecting the ecosystem.
