Urban Tree, Lufasi kick starts 1 Million tree planting campaign Saturday

URBAN Tree Revival Team (UTRT) and Lekki Urban Forestry and Animal Shelter Initiative (LUFASI) have unveiled plans to commence tree planting project targeted to nurture a million trees.  

The project is being implemented through the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) with supports from 120 volunteers already mobilised to commence the activity.

Ahead of the project, the volunteers already commenced registration with a commitment to fully partake in the programme.

Ms Omobola Eko, Convener of UTRT said arrangements have been made to kick-start the project.

According to her, the tree planting campaign would begin from the Lekki axis to other parts with a tree planted on every available space.

The group promised to ensure the trees are nurtured to maturity, adding that such trees could lessen climate change havoc on human.

“It will be a disservice to the unborn generation of our dear nation if we stand aloof and feel unconcerned without planting trees to shield them from the subsisting climate unfriendly conditions,” Godspower Kuku, a volunteer said.

“Other climes are taking steps to remedy the situation; we should be seen to be doing something in that direction too to sustain life in our society.”

“We are ready to storm the streets of Nigeria with tree planting until the target of one million trees is planted this year as part of our service to humanity.” He added.

Jane Asuka, another volunteer who explained that she was recruited online for the tree planting campaign, applauded the organisers.

Asuka, who is a student of the Lagos State University (LASU) highlighted impacts of climate change and how its affecting the world, with a special reference to the Australian bush wild fire.

“We need to learn from the experiences of other people and act accordingly to avert crisis,” she said.
